In her first interview since giving birth to daughter Esmeralda Amada in September, Eva Mendes reveals the reason why she and Ryan Gosling chose the name (yep — you, us and the rest of the world right) and opens up about all things motherhood.

“Ryan and I both love the Esmeralda character from the Victor Hugo novel, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and just think it’s a beautiful name,” she tells Violet Grey’s digital publication, ‘The Violet Files’. “Amada was my grandmother’s name. It means ‘beloved’ in Spanish.”
