Apparently Equality And Common Sense Aren't Relevant Anymore
As you might know, "Time" magazine has this tradition of compiling a list of words every year that they feel should be banned. For instance, in previous years, they've banned "twerk" and "YOLO." You get the idea: there are words that somehow become trendy and vastly overused, and they get annoying. Ha ha, right? It's a fun thing, this list of banned words.
This year, Time has plenty of words to choose from. There's "bae," which has seemingly taken over, as well as "basic," "turnt," and the ever popular phrase, "I can't even." Another word that is apparently ripe for banning? "Feminist." No, really, that's on the list. Apparently hearing about feminism is just as obnoxious as hearing "yaaasssss." Here's their reasoning:
You have nothing against feminism itself, but when did it become a thing that every celebrity had to state their position on whether this word applies to them, like some politician declaring a party? Let’s stick to the issues and quit throwing this label around like ticker tape at a Susan B. Anthony parade.
Just to be clear, feminism is not a bad thing. It's not a bad thing to talk about feminism, it's not a bad thing to call yourself a feminist. It's just not. It's actually embarrassing that this is even a thing that we need to discuss, isn't it? It's like these people are actually saying "hey, equality is fine and all, but do we really need to keep talking about it?" And for a publication of Time's caliber, that's simply unacceptable.
