Rose McGowan Needs to Back

3:30 AM By

Rose McGowan is typically pretty OK, or at least she stays under the radar enough to be seen that way. But apparently that was all just a nice little lie, because judging by this thing she said on Bret Easton Ellis' podcast, she's actually pretty darn awful:

“Gay men are as misogynistic as straight men, if not more so. I have an indictment of the gay community right now, I’m actually really upset with them. You wanna talk about the fact that I have heard nobody in the gay community, no gay males, standing up for women on any level? There is Sharia law active in Saudi Arabia, there’s a woman who’s about to be stoned – I have not heard [AIDS activist] Cleve Jones discuss her, and nor will he. I think it’s what happens to you as a group when you are starting to get most of what you fought for. What do you do now? What I would hope they would do is extend a hand to women. Women, by-and-large, have very much helped the gay community get to where they are today. And I have seen not a single peep from these people, who supposedly represent lesbians as well… when the equal pay act was shut down by Republicans in the Senate, not a single man mentioned that. I see now people who have basically fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange speedo and take molly."

Yeah, that's not such a great spiel to go on, is it? We don't even need to get into that terribly offensive and, honestly, gross last sentence there, but the rest of it doesn't really make sense either. You just can generalize like this, you can't blame the entire gay community for the continued existence of misogyny. It just doesn't make sense. And why would she expect gay rights activists to fight for women's rights, too? Just because they're more focused on their own causes doesn't mean they hate women, and just because someone doesn't constantly and publicly discuss the importance of women's rights doesn't mean that person doesn't believe in them.

Rose upset a lot of people with this, and, according to some statements she made on Twitter, she's not that sorry:

I'm speaking about MY experience as a disenfranchised activist.I apologize because I like speedos (they're funny,) I like floats and I'd probably like Molly if I tried it. #human

So you got offended. Big f---ing deal. Pull up your bootstraps, march on, get a life & get some f---ing perspective. You bore me.

Did any of you think that you may have offended me at some point with your attitudes? Guess what, I'll survive. So will you.

Um, didn't this whole thing start because Rose was offended? But no, sure, let's pull up our bootstraps, everyone. Anyone can say whatever they want to without criticism, unless it's something that Rose McGowan doesn't like. Got it.

UPDATE: Rose issued a better apology, but she's still not all that sorry:

I was on Bret Easton Ellis's podcast the other day discussing sexism and misogyny. I made a dumb generalization, and for that I apologize. For everything else I said, no, I will not ... Could I have articulated my frustration in a better fashion? Undoubtedly. For that I apologize, but I stand by my overall point ... And as for those who question my allegiance to the gay community and try to paint me as a gay-hater, I have a big eye roll reserved just for you. I'm a human, I mess up, but I mess up with love and good intentions. I feel like I'm a fight with my family.

We'll give her the benefit of the doubt this time, but man, maybe next time she could just think before she unleashes all that terribleness.
